On Thursday of last week, Google announced on Twitter that the platform would be releasing a broad core algorithm update named the ‘December 2020 Core Update’.
Google usually releases a few algorithm updates over the year that can shake up the search engine results pages and can see websites rise or fall on the rankings. However, this is the first one since 4th May; it’s likely the pandemic has delayed the rollout of this core update, as more time than usual has passed since the last one; this could mean the December update will be more impactful.

Like with any algorithm update announcements, the SEO community responded with anxiety, with some SEO experts heading to Twitter to voice their dismay.
It’s easy to assume the worst when updates are released but they also offer a great opportunity for sites to be rewarded for their optimisation efforts over the past months.
When catching up with Curtis Gabriel’s resident Digital Marketer Mia Harrison, she said,
‘If your website has been badly affected by the update, make sure you are checking the content and pages on your website to ensure they are unique, relevant and helpful to users! No matter how confident you are in your website and its relevance to the search results, any Google update can be nerve-wracking, when waiting to see how your site has been affected. We are feeling lucky at Curtis Gabriel with very little damaged caused from the update!’
