My (Very Average) Working From Home Routine

I’ve been a social media manager at a digital marketing agency for about 10 months and I’m loving it, it’s challenging of course, but what job isn’t?! My daily responsibilities include content scheduling, Facebook Advertising, writing industry-specific blogs and working with the wider team to implement social media marketing strategies.

Before lockdown, working from home was slowly being introduced at my work and I hadn’t needed or had the chance to work away from the office before.

I’m fortunate enough that the work our agency does can be done remotely to the same high quality – WiFi dependent.

So we were thrown in at the deep end of working from home and I very much hoped for the best.

6.30am – 8.30am
I’ve been trying to start my day at a similar time to when I was going into the office – mostly so it’s not a complete culture shock when I do go back and have been trying really hard not to just roll out of bed and start work. – Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

By 6.30am I’m out of the house on my morning walk with my Mum; one hour, roughly 5-6km later and I’m done. This has actually become a great alternative to my normal commute to the physical office, which is a 20-minute walk there and back again.

Home. Shower. Pick a podcast.

My current ‘WFH OOTD’ (working from home outfit-of-the-day) is a pair of Gymshark leggings and a baggy shirt – perfect for any video calls; business up top and comfy from the waist down!

What my clients don’t know about my fluffy bed socks, won’t hurt them.

8.30am – 12.30pm
The first call of any working from home day is with my Head of Section to talk about any client updates, what I have coming up and any support I might need.

Morning’s consist of scheduling social media posts for my clients for the coming week, using the social media management platform, Sprout. I tend to schedule 2-3 clients a day and submit them to my Head of Section by 2pm.

I can’t eat breakfast too early otherwise I need my lunch at 10.45 so I’ve been keeping to my usual schedule of a 9.30am feed. My go-to at the moment is porridge with oat milk, a banana and honey and that’ll see me all the way through to my 12.30pm lunch break…and maybe with the odd biscuit as well!

1.30pm – 5.30pm
This is a great time to catch up with clients; I almost always schedule calls in the afternoon, giving me ample time to prepare or rearrange my scheduling if needed.

Some days I host a quick Zoom workout for those of us ‘in the office’ that need to stretch our legs and talk to team members who aren’t in our usual communication circles. I put together a quick 10-15 minute HIIT circuit, legs or abs blast – anything that’ll get our heart rates up and a little bit sweaty.

The rest of my afternoon consists of live work*, account TLCs (making sure everything from bios to banners look on-brand and relevant) and Facebook Advertising. The latter is probably one of my favourite parts of my job, this is where client ROI can really be delivered.

Throughout the day I also check any inbound messages on all client social platforms, passing enquiries on or replying to comments – this is all done very neatly through Sprout.

*Live work refers to extra posts that some clients get that aren’t scheduled in advance; most of this comes in the form of retweets, engaging with trending hashtags or particular accounts.  I round off the day how I started, with a quick catch up with my Head of Section and submit my Working From Home Worksheet (think: official to-do/done list), clear off any remaining messages and send any account handovers to our Out of Hours team.

Now it’s time to log off.

My evenings are spent unwinding from my day in front of my laptop, dinner with the rest of the family, a quick workout vid on YouTube and then I scurry upstairs to get some distance between myself and the kitchen table.

Until next time,
Hannah xo

  1. Another interesting blog Hannah! Its nice to hear of the ins and outs (so to speak) of your job as I was curious about what kind of things you would be getting up to. Keep up the good work!
